Plagiarism checker for teachers
plagiarism.ink lets you check a student's paper for passages copied from the web. You paste the text, press the check button, and get a list of the passages that appear on other pages, each with a link to the matching page. The free check needs no account.
Checking a paper
- Copy the student's text from the document or the submission system.
- Paste it into the box on the home page and press the check button.
- Open each flagged passage and compare it with the page it matched.
Premium subscribers can upload a Word document directly, have quoted text skipped, search more passages per paper and print a report to keep with the assignment. See plans and pricing.
When there is a match
- Look at the quotation marks and citations first. Cited quotes will always match their source.
- Check the length. A short phrase can match by chance. A full sentence or paragraph in identical wording is much harder to explain.
- Look at the source. A match on a study-notes site or essay bank is more telling than a match on a dictionary page.
- Talk to the student. Ask them to explain the passage in their own words. A checker report is a reason to ask, not proof.
Limits to keep in mind
The checker searches the public web. It will not find a paper copied from another student unless that paper is online, and it will not catch careful paraphrasing. Read how plagiarism checkers work for more on what a report can and cannot show.
